Sanibel Real Estate Blog: We’re Number 3, Almost.

Maybe another year, but Florida is narrowing in on New York’s spot as the third most populous in the United States.

The latest estimates released on Jan. 6 says Florida trails by only 100,000 residents. This chilly winter could speed the process!

The estimated population in Florida is now 19,552,860 residents- up 230,000 from last year and up 750,000 from 2010.

Why Florida? Well, duh, the climate is likely the number one reason. Add to that: no state income tax, and incentives for businesses relocating and you have a combo that is tough to beat.

The population change also resulted in Florida  picking up two seats in Congress while New York lost two.

The new estimate put the U.S. population at 316.1 million as of July 1, with states in the South and West grower faster than the rest of the country.
