Sanibel Real Estate Blog: Hurricane Predictions

June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season and with it the NOAA hurricane activity predictions. They are expecting an “active to extremely active” season.

Across the entire Atlantic Basin for the six-month season, projecting a 70 percent probability of the following ranges:

  • 14 to 23 Named Storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including:
  • 8 to 14 Hurricanes (top winds of 74 mph or higher), of which:
  • 3 to 7 could be Major Hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of at least 111 mph)

While they are predicting more active than normal, FEMA is getting prepared. Here on the southwest coast of Florida, on the barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva, as well as inland Fort Myers, being prepared is a very smart tactic. I am little behind on my prepartions, which at this point consists of replenishing the “ready kit”.  The ready kit info is available online at (how clever is that?). Besides the kit, it gives lots of valuable timeline advice, in the event of a hurricane or storm. You can also follow any storm activity at NOAA, or become a “fan” on Facebook and be updated while checking out your social life.

For our snowbird clients, the Andrews Sanibel real estate team is here to help. Give us a call or drop a note at if you are looking for Sanibel storm updates.  We will carry on by preparing for worst and hoping for the best during this upcoming storm season.
